Oriented Strand Structure & Strength Direction

Oriented Surface Strands

Long wood strands in the outer layers are mainly aligned with the panel’s major axis, helping provide higher bending strength and stiffness in the length direction.

Cross-Oriented Core Layers

Core strands are arranged across the main direction to improve dimensional stability and support balanced structural performance through the panel.

Major & Minor Axis

OSB has directional mechanical properties. The major axis normally provides higher bending performance, while the minor axis contributes cross-panel stability.

OSB Manufacturing & Quality Control

Galaxi works with established OSB manufacturing resources within Linyi and China’s wood-based panel supply network. Production is coordinated according to OSB grade, panel thickness, strand orientation, bonding system and final application requirements.

Strand Preparation

Selected wood is processed into long, thin strands with controlled geometry for OSB panel production.

Drying & Screening

Wood strands are dried and screened to control moisture, size distribution and production consistency.

Resin & Wax Blending

Resin and wax are applied to the strands to provide bonding strength and moisture resistance according to grade.

Strand Orientation & Mat Forming

OSB Buying Questions

What is the difference between OSB/2, OSB/3 and OSB/4?

OSB/2 is for load-bearing use in dry conditions, OSB/3 is for load-bearing use in humid conditions, and OSB/4 is for higher-performance load-bearing applications in humid conditions. The correct grade should be selected according to structural load and the expected service environment.

Is OSB/3 waterproof?

No. OSB/3 is moisture resistant, not waterproof. It is designed for structural use in humid service conditions, but prolonged direct water exposure, standing water and uncontrolled outdoor weathering should still be avoided.

Which OSB grade is suitable for roofing and wall sheathing?

OSB/3 is commonly selected for roof decking and wall sheathing. It combines structural load-bearing performance with improved resistance to humid service conditions and is widely used in timber-frame construction.

What OSB thickness should I use for flooring?

Structural flooring commonly uses OSB panels around 15–25 mm thick. The final thickness depends on support spacing, expected load, OSB grade and the flooring system design. Higher loads or wider support spacing generally require thicker panels.

What is the difference between square edge and tongue & groove OSB?

Square edge OSB has straight-cut edges, while tongue & groove OSB uses interlocking edges. T&G panels are especially useful for subfloors and roof decking where better edge alignment and load transfer between adjacent panels are required.

Does OSB have a strength direction?

Yes. OSB has a major axis and a minor axis. The oriented surface strands normally provide higher bending strength and stiffness along the major axis, while the cross-oriented core layers support stability across the panel.

What information should I provide for an OSB quotation?
